Kenneth and Jamal are two friends in their early 20s who need to make some money – preferably fast. So they get jobs as telemarketers with New Energy, a company selling ”green” power. New Energy is a fast-paced workplace with lots of money, partying, tough competition and an intense brotherhood with the other telemarketers. Eve is the tough top telemarketer, more macho than the guys, and Troels is the brainwashed yes man. Ibo is the jolly clown, and Ali the pessimistic skeptic who sees conspiracies everywhere. However, there’s a dark side to the company, and slowly the rottenness starts to seep out. For it turns out that their CEO Bjarne is a volatile nightmare. He’s an extremely charismatic leader, who can sell anything unscrupulously. One moment, he’s ready to drop everything to pay off his staff’s debt, and the next, he’s ready to fire anyone for the slightest remark. If you sell, you’re in Bjarne’s good graces and he showers you with gold cards and VIP tables; if you don’t, you’re out. Bjarne pressures his employees to change. He has a clear vision of what it takes for his telemarketers to make it to the top of the salesboard. Kenneth is pressured into letting go of his drunken yet loving father in Vejle. Jamal is taken out of his designer hoodie and put into a suit and forced to change his name to Christian, because Bjarne thinks it sounds better in Danish. Slowly but surely, Bjarne positions himself as a toxic role model in the two young boys’ lives. The company wedges itself in between Kenneth and Jamal, when Kenneth under Bjarne’s wing rises to the top of the hierarchy. He starts to lose himself in the constant partying and self-glorifying fantasies about his own greatness. Meanwhile, Jamal and top telemarketer Eve find out that New Energy isn’t as green and competitive as Bjarne likes to make everyone believe. They’re heading for a showdown, both the boys and Bjarne and also Kenneth and Jamal, who are moving i different directions. ALWAYS BE CLOSING is a dramatic coming-of-age comedy set in a tough and disheartening job market. It’s about dominance, discrimination and father complexes in an overheated sales industry, where being yourself doesn’t pay off. For in the quest to con others for personal gain, do you end up conning yourself?
