While tourists are increasingly going on “Wine Safaris”, this in-depth journalistic documentary will expose how thousands of wine yard workers in South Africa have been illegally evicted and now live in shelter towns in tin-pan houses without toilets, electricity or water. Pesticides are used without any kind of protection, and the infamous “Dop-system” from the Apartheid days still exists where workers are paid in bad wine as part of their salary, which results in major abuse of alcohol among the workers. We will investigate the most popular wines from South Africa, sold in huge numbers in Western supermarkets, and we will confront the companies and address the environmental and ethical issues under which the wine is produced.
