Lasse Spang Olsen, a professional stuntman who has spent his whole life putting his life one the line, was suddenly involved in an accident that the doctors didn’t think he would survive. Lying on the surgery table, he was told that he would probably not wake up again. The incident took place shortly after Lasse returned home from a film expedition in the Philippines, where men were being crucified every year, to achieve contact with God. Three months later Lasse was back in Denmark, and he received a text message on his phone. The message came from a religious guide in the Philippines, and it read: “Drink water - there is something seriously wrong with your stomach”. Lasse did not drink water, and three hours later he was lying on the surgery table in the hospital. As he was lying there, all alone in the surgery room, he decided that if he survived, he would go to the Philippines and learn to believe in God, so that he would have someone to talk to the next time he was close to death. His mission was to be crucified on Good Friday at Easter. The problem was just that Lasse didn’t believe in God at all. No non-Filipino had ever before been given permission to be crucified, least of all a non-believing, protestant, like Lasse. But the outcome of the experiment, which extended over three months, was quite surprising.
